PrologueTo be honest, I can’t even remember the last time I was in Budapest. My desire to travel has decreased lately. However, this time I was able to find many programs and I pulled the trigger.

Thursday (10-02-2025): I didn’t want to watch a 2-4 laned motorway for 6 hours while driving, so I bought a train ticket. I carried a couple of bike related items (fork, and some rubber for shifters). I was happy to sell them, because I could finance the trip with that money ($250). After business I went to the hotel and picked up the keys. I spend exactly 5 minutes in my room and I headed back to the city to watch the presentation of Ferenc Szőnyi, a crazy ultracyclist from Hungary who cycled through Canada (12500 KM) in 45 days. The price for the ticket wasn’t cheap ($60) , but it went into charity. And this guy is a living legend anyway. He mentioned some nice moments and experiences. Among the nice bits there were also less satisfying moments like cold/wet weather, heavy truck traffic, the ascents of Rocky Mountain, torn Achilles/muscles, logistical/resupply issues between small towns. After the presentation I consumed propably my fanciest hot dog from a shipshaped bowl.

Friday (03-10-2025): Yesterday I was in a pretty bad shape due to cold. I took my time in the morning. Thankfully I felt myself strong enough to start the hike as planned (maybe a bit late). I bought some food (layer cake/strudel, water, coffee), because the forest won’t offer much later on. I didn’t have a well contoured goal, I planned a sympathic route on a map and I tried to follow it. The first hour was really chilly. Due to cold I was wearing multiple layers of clothes. The hotel had two tea bags so I was able to bring some hot drink with me. I found a cosy bench where the sunrays were dancing. Sipping warm tea felt really good. After 20 KM of hiking my feet were telling me that I should find a comfy couch, put them in the air and let them enjoy the sweet idleness. The peak point of the tour was the Csergezán Pál lookout on Nagy-Kopasz. I was looking at the time, and I realised that the sun moves quicker on the sky than me on the ground. Down the hill I found a few photo themes, and if I didn’t pay attention I could have easily collided with some mtb riders. I was peacefully walking on a singletrack when I heard the noise of tires coming closer and closer. The half-hour delay in the morning and the breaks during the day meant that the sunset catched my in the forest. I reached a somewhat busy street in pitch dark, which made me shiver. Car drivers could barely notice an idiot walking beside the road without any lights. Fortunately I could countinue the hike on the other side of road. I galloped on the tourist trail with the light of my phone until I reached a park. I was pretty low on battery so I used the traditional way and asked a girl for directions. I couldn’t even see her face in the dark, so I am not sure if she felt herself comfortable during the speech with a completely stranger. Anyway I made a break at a bus station to hopefully shorten the distance to the tram, but the bus didn’t stop, so I continued the walking to Hűvösvölgy (Chilly valley). I find this name really practical because it was really chilly. I bought some food and ate some pizza and I went back to the hotel. In the end it felt like needles are pushing through my thigh with every step.

Conclusion: For the restart this hike was much longer than it should have been. However I was enjoying the sweet monotony of walking, the chance that I was able to take good photos again. Being in the nature is somuch more exciting than being in the office all day long. I just can’t feel myself well in corporate environment. I had this job so long and it completely drained my soul. People don’t need psychiatrist. People need fresh mountain air, wind and sunlight. Our modern world is simply so f.cked up.

Recommendation: I enjoyed this hiking route, but for tourists there are much better paths/goals available. I can certainly recommand the lookout on Nagy-Kopasz. It is easily within reach from Nagykovácsi. The ground was partly pretty rough and rocky. My shoes have a really soft sole. For better experience I recommand shoes with a stiffer sole. Feet massage is nice, but your feet will strike after a while

Saturday (10-04-2025): In the morning I was pleasantly surprised that my legs were still working. So, first of all, I walked over to a friend of mine who was renovating his apartment. He won’t be bored any time soon! Then I went to Csepel to get my rear wheel with internal gearing hub. I’ve never been to this island before. This particular area was quite industrial. The hub was so worn out after 10k KM that it was better/cheaper to find a donor than to replace the small parts one by one. So I get 6 kg of extra weight to walk with my sore legs.

My next program was the closing Meme Museum. I was browsing on Facebook then this ad came into my view. I have no idea how this museum survived for 2-3 years in recession,  but I have to see it with my own eyes. In its last days it felt somewhat empty. I wonder how it looked like earlier. I found a couple of interesting memes (Pedro, Bunchie, Nyan cat which has been sold for $600.000)

Reduced rent or not, I don’t see how a similar „business” could be profitable. Filling the museum with rarities requires a bottomless wallet. Especially if you’re going for more interesting, collectible specimens. I could imagine a kind of craft/dummy-like museum. If you’re not lazy, you can invest countless hours of work, and money into recreating certain memes. Hats off to the guy for trying something like this in Budapest in the middle of an economic crisis.

After the memes my stomach alerted me to get some proper food. Museums rarely fill out your stomach on their own. So I visited my favorite mexican restaurant. I ordered beef quesadillas with chilly powder and salat. Jesus Christ! The struggle was real. Burning tears were running down on my cheeks. This was a proper treatment for my cold. I like those type of restaurants, because you can’t recreate this food at home and they bring you out of your comfort zone. This was my last of the trip so when I headed towards the trainstation I was thinking about making some fried cheese. The stores are closed in Austria so I was traveling with a 2L sunflower oil. I wanted to buy a bottle of alcohol. But for pracitcal reasons I went for the oil. Quite the change it was!

Running is most ancient and accessible sweetener of human wellbeing.

The benefits of running:

  • Running on empty stomach exacerbate fat burning
  • You can release your excess energy before heading to a boring office job
  • It helps people getting know their living environment better
  • It is not expensive as cross training

Prologue

As a school kid, I didn’t particularly like running or any other form of exercising. This can be attributed to two things. First, it was mandatory, and second, I had overweight. I had to wait many years for my first „voluntary” run. When I went to university in Veszprém between 2013 and 2019, I had to collect sport signatures. Although I was an active mountain biker, I didn’t belong to any club that could have provided me signatures. Most of them came from gym workouts and badminton. I also tried running, but as a beginner, running in the city center of Veszprém wasn’t a very well-considered decision. Although my circulatory system was used to aerobic exercise, running – especially running on hills – uses  completely different muscles. I was happy to be alive in my first group run.

However, during university, I was not scheduled from early morning to late night, so I could easily fit in hobby like running. Hence I was a mtb rider, I prefered natural environment and running on asphalt wasn’t that interesting for me. So I chose the local forest for running. The vast majority of my runs were between 40 minutes and 1 hour. Fat burning starts after 30 minutes of excercising, so 40 minutes were necessarry. Runs above 90 minutes left bigger strains on the body, which I didn’t like. I already had a main sport, and I was not able to concentrate on multiple sports. I have never wanted to become a succesful runner. I only run for fun and for its benefits. For me every run is succesful, if I was able to get out of the bed early and I could end it without getting injured.
At first I used to run 5K then after a while I discovered better training places and this required me to run longer. Now I usually run 10K, which is around one hour moving time. Unfortunately, above 20 °C, my biggest struggle is the hot weather. The vast majority of races fall in the warm season, it can be very bad until my body gets somewhat used to it. For me there is no offseason. I enjoy running in colder weather more than in summer.  In my first year in the Winter I got up in the darkness and run with a light on my head. It was super bad. Now I rather arrive late at work, but run when the sun is already up. I usually run on Tuesday and Thursday so I can manage my body battery better. I have 3x weight training on each week and I spend the rest days with cycling. Time management is not ideal, but I can’t make a better training plan with a dayjob. Upper body is important for riding offroad. Most cyclists only have one sport, so they can spend 3x more time in the saddle than me.

Electrical devices: After you start running sooner or later you most likely end up purchasing some kind of watch/gps. Phones got fairly big and carying them while running is challanging. Moreover they usually have worse signal and can’t really track you well. For a lot of excercises heart rate monitoring is needed. When I studied abroad in 2017, I made a running break. My „comeback” run happened in January 2023. I have a sentimental personality. After spending a few years in a given place, my motivation can drop. The change of environment has a positive effect on me at first, but then as the daily routine in my life develops, my field of vision starts to get narrower narrower. The positive things simply disappear and negativity starts to gain control over me. So far, I have been able to deal with this by moving to another place. The reason for the change was mainly work-related, where I am still not that lucky. I managed to find of a work related to my study field, but the rather low/under average salary leads to constant stress both physically and mentally. It does not matter if I work in my home country or abroad, I always felt like I put a lot of work in the job but it has been never paid out.
Around 2020 there was a big change. This was a really dark year for me. I have lost my appetite for traveling and I still haven’t regained it fully. That’s why I started running again, so I could get out of my comfort zone again. Initially, I bought a first (or second?) edition Garmin smartwatch (Garmin Vivofit) to see if I could fit running workouts into my everyday life. It measured steps, distance, and of course heart rate using a chest strap. I later replaced the smartwatch with a more accurate GPS watch (Garmin Forerunner 15) because I missed the map in  Strava workouts and it would have been nice to be able to look back at my heart rate. After a couple of hundres of KM I bought a biceps hrm, which uses only Bluetooth connection and the watch doesn’t have it. So an upgrade is needed. I still haven’t decided which watch should I choose.

Basic pillar 1: weight training

As a beginner, I was surprised by how much stress running puts on certain muscles in the upper body. Training these muscles is essential for becoming a better runner.

Basic pillar 2: stretching/yoga

It is recommanded for everyone and essential for older people (over 30). You can find a lot of yoga exercises on the internet that are useful after sports. I alternate stretching/rolling.

Basic pillar 3: foam roller

For rich people, there is the opportunity to use the help of a masseur 1-2 times a week. Other people, like me, have to use some kind of foam roll make do with rolling. It is easy to learn how to use it. My first roller was very hard and did more harm than good. It is worth choosing a softer design. On the evening of running days, I usually massage my legs with ointment/ice gel.

Running experiences: At the beginning I was incredibly happy when Garmin recognised my excercise as a run. If you are new to running or you had a longer break, you usally walk more than run. You need time to improve your running form. After two years of running I am still surprised about how these up and down emotions follow themselves during a run. Sometimes you feel yourself really strong, and after 5 minutes you have to take a break or walk. During running you have to manage your energy level more. If you spend all of your energies running up the hill, your legs get tired and in the downhills you can’t freewheeling. If course you can still get yourself into the state of flow.

Running clothes: I was absolutely surprised by how expensive running related clothes are. Let’s take a closer look. It’s worth wearing a headband against sweat or a cap in the winter. As a running top, I use synthetic T-shirts or cycling clothes I got from previous races. Running pants are a bit more complex. As a whole year runner, you need at least three pairs of pants: summer shorts, long pants for colder weather, and a thermal pants for cold weather. Personally, I don’t like wearing lycra and other close-to-the-skin pants. They are uncomfortable, so I only wear loose-fitting pants. Running socks should be thicker to provide better cushioning and to wick away sweat. And finally, the most important and expensive accessory: a pair of good running shoes. I used to run with a Nike. When I started running again, I took them out again, but after 6 years they were not comfortable anymore. A replacement insole helped until I decided to buy a more expensive/branded running shoe. These were the Mizuno Wave Rebellion shoes. I didn’t have any foot pain right after the first run. I thought about trying another brand, but if they work well why should I invest time and money. Anyway, after two years of usage I ended up stocking up some older Mizuno shoes. So even a runaway model costs you around 100$ (on sale!).

I ran ~400k with my first pair of Mizuno shoes. The sole looks like brand new, but the textil parts have already a lot of tears and other signs of wear. And I had to go to a shoemaker. The internet tells that you can expect 500-800k from a running shoes. I this is rather an optimistic estimation.
Fueling: For me this is as simple as it gets. I usually run two times a week before work. I wake up, take my shoes on and go outside. I have to admit that running on empty stomach right after waking up is not the best for the body. If I run longer than 5k I take a foldable silicine cup with me to drink some water from a fountain. After a succesful running I often buy some fancy food like: donuts, salmon or avocado.
Running events: I think they start around 15$. Personally I don’t see any reason why should I pay for a 5-10k run. Fortunately I don’t run longer distances. If I were living in Hungary, where the are a lot of hiking events, I might take apart on them as a runner. But when I am at home (in county Zala), it is one of the worst regions for hiking.

Redeem coins

I have been collecting small coins for the fifth year now. To be honest, I have never understood why do 1 and 2 euro coins exist and I think the inflation of the past 5 years has „put/taken away” the purpose of 5 cents as well. I think Austrians keep them just out of respect for tradition. One of the tasks of tidying up my home was to redeem my small collection. So I collected all coins from every corner. They weighed around 2.4 kilos in total. Of course, I sorted out the larger coines before I headed to the bank.

The redeemed coins:

Number of pieces (pcs) Value of coin (€) Total value (€)
210 0,01 2,1
326 0,02 6,52
111 0,05 5,55
51 0,10 5,1
20 0,20 4,0
7 0,50 3,5

It was nice to finally get rid of these „paper weights”. Although the vending machine didn’t recognize some of them I was able to „get back the value” most of the coins. In the end I have got €26.77, which is enough for two small grocery store visit. Unfortunately, Austrian food prices are absolutely outrageous. I don’t even go shopping by car anymore, because I easily end up buying all sorts of stupid things. A medium-sized backpack is more than enough for the job. I made a table of food prices of the past 1-1.5-2 years. I should make a good statistics out of it, but it is such a boring job, I always end up postponing it. So, an article about this is expected in the near future, which will show you that life in Austria isn’t easy-peasy.

Prologue:

I wanted to attend a bikepacking tour, where you can experience the whole spectrum of emotions, and it looks like a holiday. The Quick Bite! is the shorter route of the famous Seven Serpents. The worst hiking paths are missing, but don’t worry, you will encounter with some really steep roads, where hiking is almost mandatory. You still get some mountain passages above 1000 m.

Place and date:

Ljubljana

06.05.2023 Saturday

Preparations:

They weren’t perfect. They never are! I bought bigger backpack just before the day of arrival. I simply needed more place. I tried my inflatable matte on the first night. The rear tire’s valve was clogged and I couldn’t really adjust the pressure. I was hoping that I won’t have to adjust it during the tour. I barely analysed the route. My plan was simple. I am riding till sunset, find a camping place, take out the tent and rest so long my body needs. The route had some really remote sections. On the first two days there were barely any stores/restaurants available. Cres/Istria were the same.

I took a direct train from Vienna to Ljubljana. There is a direct connection between Vienna and Trieste (the train also goes through Ljubljana). This was one of the reasons why I choosed this bikepacking event. Easy travel means less stress and more joy.

First day: Thru’ Slovenian Villages

Unfortunately I left my chest strap at home. I was not able to make videos on the rough stuff. We get a really nice looking helmet mount in the start packet, but there were no mounting bolt.  A running race was held in Ljubljana and we were crossing the course. It was a little bit hectic, but it was mostly uphill. We went through uncountable small Slovenian villages. I was really comfy on my mtb. 2,3″ tire at front gave me a lot of confidence in turns. The weather was kinda mixed. Sometimes the temperatures were above 30 °C, sometimes it was cloudy and we also had rain.

The only man-made attraction was the castle built into the cliff in Predjama. I washed my body at the cemetery (best place, if you want to refresh yourself) and I was looking for some food, because I ate müsli bars all day long and I wanted to have some other type of food. Thankfully the bakery was open in the nearby town. I barely remembered how I should set up my tent. This was my first trip in 2023.

Second Day:  In the Shadow of Mountains

The night was pretty bad. I was drinking a lot through the day, but it was not enough. I almost drank all of my water in the night. I had a couple of sips of water remaining in my bottles. I had to be careful, because the next town was miles away. After some hiking and riding down on steep fire roads, I was approaching the town. Suddenly one liter ice tea and some coffee disappeared into my stomach. I was trying to get better food at the gas station, but there were only junk available. I was missing my stove for sure! I am not going to left it home next time.

After the wonderful lakes, a pretty big mountain was coming. The fire road was kinda nerve wrecking. 3 meter wide gravel road was going up all the way. It had a steady grade. I almost got gravel sickness in the evening. I don’t have problem with gravel, but as a mtb rider I prefer dirt roads. I had to take some breaks, because my mind/body didn’t like the monotony. The downhill was kinda cool. I got pretty tired and I didn’t want to ride at night. I made camp on a large field somewhere on the border between Slovenia and Croatia. It wasn’t the best idea. The night was bitterly cold in a summer sleeping bag. I was wearing almost everything in 7 °C.

Harmadik nap: Finally Sea!

Wow, it is only the third day and I can’t count the days properly. I felt myself like Tom in Cast Away. There is a significant difference between office life and bikepacking life.

After the cold night I was able to inspect the sea. It was still far away, but at least I got a glimpse of it. I am not lying, on the onroad section I felt myself really bad. Finally fine offroad sections came up. Have I wrote fine? It was rather rough! But I was enjoying them on my mtb. My companion, a Croatian couple weren’t enjoying themselves that much. I am almost sure that they sold those gravel bikes after this tour. Everything was nice until the front wheel picked up a pretty big stone and it met with my tibia. The pain was really big, I felt it even after a couple of weeks.

Before the bridge of Krk I have seen a gas station. Fresh Corner! This is what I needed! After refueling, I crossed the bridge. It was a little bit too narrow for my taste so I rode on the sidewalk and I took some pictures. After the bridge I forgot to start the next section on my Garmin. So I cut down the course a little bit. When I get back to the seaside, I found a cosy restaurant and in the end of 3rd day I was finally able to eat something normal. After the meal I was enjoying the hills and nice views. I was barely able to find a good camping place. Everything was full of stones. And I don’t like places where you can meet with people.

Fourth Day: Adventures on the Island

Finding a good camping place at the seaside wasn’t simple. Finally I found an old path, where the grass was pretty big and comfy for sleeping. Unfortunately I wasn’t the only one here. Mosquitos were also there. They were waiting for their prey and I had to donate some blood. Krk isn’t a friendly place to ride a bike. Short, steep uphills made my forenoon difficoult. The view was often astonishing and I had to take a bunch of mandatory photo-breaks, eating-breaks, and buying-music-chests-breaks. I was not lucky with the ferries. I was alwast late and I had to wait an hour for them. It wasn’t bad tough, at least I had time for dotwatching and I followed the what’s app group, where people wrote what they have left behind. There were bottles, sunglasses and other items. Thankfully I slept enough and this time I didn’t lose any important thing.

The first big ascent on Cres… 28 °C, sunshine without any shadows, constant 7-10%. It was marvelous. I felt myself like an ice cream. Apart from the landscape there were nothing to see on the island. The the northern part of the island is a wander paradise. With a MTB it was OK, but sometimes walking was better for the legs. Before the arrival of the second ferry I bought my first Lasko beer on the tour. Unfortunately the trip was fairly dangerous to eat/drink any alcohol. I have lost counting after a while how many ways could you die in the race. I would recommand this race only for advanced riders. After the beer I got chills.

I will  initialise that the ferry docks should not be built at sea level. The uphill after the ferry ride felt not quite right. In a small town I have found a house under consruction. Because the weather will be very bad next day, I wanted to start as early as possible. A lot stuff was there, so I expected that the workers will be there after the sunrise. I didn’t want any confrontation.

Fifth Day: Surviving

To be honest the bicycle trip was over on the ferry. Everything after that was a pure nightmare. The rain arrived just before noon. After I reached the top I was wearing almost every clothes I had. Scarf, long trousers, rain jacket etc. My legs were frozen, and I had to hike every steep uphill, because riding was not possible. I hiked at least 20-30 Km’s that day. The rain was pouring down for almost 10 hours.

I found a nice small town named Hum. It was some kind of tourist’s attraction. The restaurant saved my life there. I recharhed my empty stomach and my hungry Garmin. After the lunch I didn’t want to continue, but the weather will be the same. The sooner I can get to the seaside the better is for me. Once again, the route went through remote areas. Somehow I was always found water taps, but food was out of question. The long downhill to Triest was propably the worst downhill ride of my life. A soft and flooded gravel double track gravel.

Utózöngék:

Pár finisher összeszedett a főtéren aztán lezuhanyozhattam náluk. Egészen nagy a különbség a szóló sátrazáshoz képest. Nem voltak zajok (csak horkolás), s szél sem. A reggeli is benne foglaltatott az árban és a kelleténél kicsit több időt töltöttem a kávé-tea saroknál. Még a Zucker-méz készletet is megdézsmáltam.
Aztán szereztem cipellőt a Geox boltban, még a mini cipőkanalikat is lenyúltam. Na jó, ők adtak „önként” oda. Utána véletlenszerűen megtaláltam a város legdrágább farmerboltját.

Mit csinalsz viszont a bringával:
A) Berakod a raktérbe
B) eltekersz a következő állomásig.
50-50 arányban éltünk a fenti lehetőségek egyikével. Én kivettem az első kereket és gond nélkül befért alulra a bicó. A leányzó pici bringája simán bement bármiféle hókuszpókusz nélkül. Két srác meg tekert egyet. Őszintén nekem esőben es 12 fokban nem sok kedvem lett volna hozzá.

A túra után term. átnéztem a bringa forgó alkatrészeit. A jobb pedálból kimosódott a kenőanyag.

A hátizsákos túrázás szintén bevált.

A QuickBite! pont azon a keskeny részen helyezkedik el a bikepacking túrák palettáján, ami kellő kihívást nyújt, ugyanakkor minden elszánt, felkészült bringás számára teljesíthető.

A hosszabb változat sok gyalogtúra részt is tartalmaz, aminek én speciel nem látom értelmét.

Prologue:

I did this race back in 2019. It was my first race in the saddle of a 29er bike. I tried to complete 2 rounds, but I got a flat in the first one. I repaired it and continued, got a second flat and I ended up in a car. Which was good, because walking back to the start is  time and energy consuming. After a couple of years of break I decided to finish the unfinished business. I got my hands on a rigid fork, and this race was its debut. It was really fast on smooth terrain so I gave it a chance.

Location & Date:

Ropolypuszta

22.04.2023 Saturday

Equipment:

Specialized Epic HT rigid with a small dropper post. Camelbak with 2l of water to make less pit stops, some food, and a couple of tools in case of a bike emergency.

Tactics:

Finishing the race in time.

Experience report:

The car trip wasn’t idillical at all. 2 °C temperature, miserable and bumpy roads. There were heavy rains on the week before the race. In the beforenone the temperature was better, this was my first in shorts. The course has a figure of eight. You cross the finish line before going to the second part. The course wasn’t muddy, because the top was dried out. But below the surface everything was spongy and riding on it wasn’t effortless. I tried my best, but I wasn’t quick enough to finish the race. 1) I wasn’t in shape so early in the season, 2) the mudcake below the surface made things difficult, 3) I installed a new saddle it was really uncomfortable und it wasn’t supporting my butt at all, 4) this was the first good weather day in the year, I was getting hot. Even if I didn’t make the mistakes, I think the course was too muddy to finish in time. Rigid fork wasn’t forgiving either. It is good for gravel riding, but you need a fork for proper terrain. And I never want to see this saddle again.

After 2,5 laps I got a DNF. This marathon was really difficult. I might give try next year. There is also an ebike race. If I can’t sell my ebike, I might attend it. But two laps with a small battery pack wouldn’t be easy at all! It is really on the limit, and you need to do some energy management during the race.

Anyways next week I continue my adventures in Austria!

Conclusion:

It was a really nice race, but you have to be a really strong rider to finish the long distance in time! It would have been challanging even without the mudcake!

Recommendation:

Everyone, who likes to be in the nature, to do some mud wrestling, and can live without GSM signal. The start/finish area is pretty remote, but beautiful!

After the nightride around the Lake Balaton I planned a last tour for this year. The bike path between Budapest and Lake Balaton was promising. There was an organised tour on the first day of October. I thought this is a great opportunity for us. It is even better we ride with other cyclists. Unfortunately the weather was really unpredictable and he decided not to take part at this event. I woke up around 6 am and I heard some rain noises from outside. It was not really pleasant. I hoped on a train and rode to the start area. I got lost a little bit, but after a short breakfast I was able to start the tour at 9 am.

Equipment:

I took with me my saddle bag, where I stored my SOS bike kit (spare tube, tube repair kit, some tools, spd, bolts etc.) I stored some bars and pears in my handlebar bag. I had an aerobar for additional comfort. I think it is really nice on flat surfaces. I also had a small backpack with me, because I needed extra storage room for warm clothes.

Tactics:

I wanted to hold on to my own, sporty pace during the entire tour.

Experience report:

Unfortunately I couldn’t get rid off my rain coat in the first 2-2,5 hours. After that the sky slowly changed to its original blue color. The sun was already too hot for my taste. The temperature was mild. We had a lot of small climbs on the tour. They provided additional heat to the body. They weren’t particularly long and steep, but the 1000 m (or 3280 ft) elevation gain – which equals to the biggest mountain of Hungary (Kékes) – was remarkable.

80% of the course had a good quality. The remaining 20% was bad, sometimes really bad. I wouldn’t really recommend it with a road bike. These sections suck your energy away. So did the headwind before reaching the lake.

The atmosphere was at the finish line amazing. Music, beer, food, girls. You couldn’t wish yourself more. One of the organizers briefly interviewed me about the tour, whether the rain, the hills or the wind was the most problematic. I answered yes, because every element made the tour difficult. If they hadn’t been there, the whole tour would have been fun. But that’s not what ultracycling is about.

After lunch I continued my tour to the west side of Lake Balaton. I was maintaining a really good pace. The straight roads and the boring surroundings wore out my patience. It was already offseason and after the sunset the area was basically deserted. I left my rear light at home. I would have been much calmer with one. I put some trust into my visibility vest and I rode mainly on bike path. I reached Balatonberény and I got a ride to home. 210 km (130 M) was more than enough for today.

The route contains multiple sights:

Az út során több látványosságot is meg lehet tekinteni. A teljesség igénye nélkül:

The viaduct of Biatorbágy.

The resting place in Pázmánd, where you can find several wooden sculptures.

Lake Venice is a great photo subject.

The military memorial park in Pákozd, which can be visited for an entrance fee.

The Monument of Golden Bull of 1222 and the castle of Bory in Székesfehérvár.

The second half of the course doesn’t have many sights apart from Lake Balaton. You can find programs for a full weekend.

I survived the trip with a strong muscle fever. The old bike paths were in bad shape and they caused upper body fatigue. Riding on a road bike isn’t a good idea. If you want to do this I recommend at least 32 mm wide tires front and rear. I wasn’t cautious and the sun burned my face. The bike suffered multiple paint damage due to the mudguard. I am not really satisfied with these Raceblades. They don’t offer much protection against water and mud and they eat paint. They were only a temporaly solution, till I can mount a – hopefully – better mudguard.

Data:

Place| Nr. | Name | Time | Avg.
20 | 060 | Farkas Péter | 07:00:09 | 21 kph (13 mph)

This was a sporty pace with multiple breaks (changing clothes, eating, filling up bottle etc.). I finished 20th out of 85th.

Conclusion:

Overall, I liked the bike path. Unfortunately there are parts that neither I nor the bike want to be on again. The route is difficult, but the beautiful landscape compensates for your efforts. It’s hard to define, who it is made for. It’s more challanging than the Lake Balaton bike path. I think most people wouldn’t do it on a single day.

A kerékpárút összeségében nekem tetszett.

If you liked the Lake Balaton bike path, you will enjoy this for sure!

Prologue:

I wanted to do this for ages! This cycling path belongs to the most beautiful cycling paths in the Alps. You can cross the mountain region relative easily on this route. Of course you still need to do a lot of climbing, but you can avoid the 3000-4000 m peaks. An average man with an average fitness level can do this. You will meet with billions of bridges, mountain peaks, endless and calm paved and gravel routes along rivers. This is an adventurous cycling journey. You can ride it with a road bike, but I recommend 28 mm tires to feel yourself comfortable.

Preparations:

I bought different train tickets in advance, uploaded the track to Garmin, I fastened my sleeping bag and matte on the handlebar, packed the most necessary clothing and skincare items, charged every electronic device. If you leave your home for multiple days, you have to do a lot of things beforehand. My journey began on Friday afternoon on a train. I met with Sigi, my Austrian friend in Salzburg. We are going to ride together.

First Day: Along the River

As usual, the tour started with small technical problems. My gopro fell down and its mounting piece broke. After that the zipper on my framebag wasn’t working well.

The scenery was magnificent. Ups and downs, paved and unpaved sections followed each other. Thankfully Sigi already rode this cycling path and he was a good leader. We ate in one of the local restaurants before the darkness broke in. The menu was Frittaten Soup and Salzburgschnitzel with some kind of potato croquettes. And with some beer of course! We should have stayed hydrated. We cycled in the darkness for a couple of hours. The temperature was pretty chilly. We found a cozy place in a village (Dorfgastein) and we slept under the roof of an office. I slept in my clothes, because 7 °C at night wasn’t comfortable at all. It was below the comfort temperature of my sleeping bag.

Second Day: Tasting the Alps

It was so cold in the morning. Sleeping outside at 800 meters in September wasn’t really a heart-warming feeling. The bakery opened at 6 am, so we got a warm tea and a couple of bites, before the steep uphills bit our legs. Bad Gastein is a wonderful tourist town. Monumental hotels, waterfall in the middle of the town, cafe houses at every corner. It was really quiet in the morning. The road ends after the town. Cars, cyclists and passengers have to catch a train and go through the tunnel.

On the other side we had a really fast and enjoyable downhill. Slowly the sunlight warmed us up. Instead of warm clothes, sunscreen got on the skin. A quite zig-zag path takes through the river valley. Sometimes gravel, sometimes asphalt.

In Villach I tried to cool myself down with some ice creams. My mate decided not to do the Italian part of the tour and went home. I think my pace was too slow for him.

I reached Arnordstern just before closing. I bought some food and batteries for my Garmin sensor. After the rest I continued my journey. This was my first time in Italy. After Tarvisio begins a motorway for cyclists. I cycled for a couple of hours in the darkness and I found a half made house beside the cycling path. The canalisation and piping weren’t yet complete. It was a perfect shelter.

Third Day: Italian Landscapes

I already did a couple of bikepacking tours, but this place for overnighting was absolutely superb. They even put wood to the wall for my bicycle handlebar. I didn’t wanted to leavy any marks on the nicely painted walls. I really needed some kind of cover against the rain, because it rained a lot at night.

Before noon I made the most beautiful part of the whole tour. It was a really good mixture of cycling path, bridges, rivers, valleys, mountains, steep cliffs and tunnels. I got lost a couple of times, but I always found some kind of unpaved road.

I left the mountain area slowly like a snake. Gravel and paved roads followed each other. If you are in a hurry or you want to ride fast, this trail is not for you. But if you are into adventure, you have found your dream trail.

Buying food in Italy on Sunday wasn’t easy. Fortunately the path crossed bigger towns, where I was able to refuel. I went through numerous small, but nice villages. Almost every town had a water tap. Refilling my bottle was necessary. I tried to cool my body down with beer, cold drink, meal, ice cream, but nothing worked. I had to make a longer pause at a cemetery (not so long… yet… haha), where I washed myself and I put my wet towel on the top of my head. Slowly I felt myself better. Due to the heat I reached Grado just before sunset.

There were a billion people. It was a strong contrast to what I experienced during daylight. I took a walk in the sunset and tried to leave as soon as possible. I cycled to Monfalcone with Fantaenergy. I was pretty tired and my phone, gps and light were running out of battery. I slept at a parking loot. This idea was liked by dozens of mosquitos. At 2 pm even a boar visited me. It was pretty loud. I was able to hear it for a long time after it ran away from me.

Conclusion:

The bike handled this challenge well. It was advertised as a city bike. I think this rig is perfect for touring purposes. Who the hell would buy a Di2 and Gates equipped bike for shopping in the city?!

The weather was nice during the whole tour. I haven’t washed the bike nor the belt. The 28 mm tires were too narrow to my taste. If they wear down, I will get dicker tires.

Bathing in the sea was a really nice feeling. I cycled in the cold, and in the heat for almost 3 days. My hair felt like a fatty haystack. The temperatur of the water was around 24 °C. It was pleasant and salty. I missed this feeling of how easy it is to float in salty water.

Recommendation:

This is one of the nicest and easiest way to cross the alps. I would recommend this tour to everyone. For your own enjoyment, you should hit these road with at least 32 mm wide tires. You can do it on a road bike, but you have to pay extra attention on the flat, sharp corners. You can lose traction easily. This is a week-long bike adventure. In this case you will have enough time for other programs and sightseeing.

Prologue:

This idea is related to my friend. I was really busy in the summer, but finally we were able to do it. There were other wannabe participants as well. Some of them didn’t have time, someone fall asleep, someone didn’t like the weather forecast. There are two types of cycling weather: good cycling weather and bad cycling weather. This night belongs to the second group. After all I and my friend were on the „start line” and ready to embrace the darkness.

Place and date:

Balatönfüred

27.08.2022 Saturday

Equipment:

I took with me my saddle bag, where I stored my SOS bike kit (spare tube, tube repair kit, some tools, spd, bolts etc.) I had to carry a powerbank for charging my front light and GPS. I used my handlebar bag. It had plenty of room for my security vest and chocolates. I mounted my aerobar for addicitonal comfort. I think it is really nice on flat surfaces.

Tactic:

I wanted to reach the starting town with a moderate speed then survive the night.

Experience report:

It’s been while since I rode those streets of Zala and Balaton Upperland. I was in a good form for ultra cycling, therefore I decided to cycle all the way down to the starting town. I didn’t want to use a car, because the trip would have been dangerous after so much cycling. The train was out of question. There were ongoing repairs on the railway. I estimated a 25 kph average speed. It was a bit optimistic due to the high temperature and I had to do many small climbs. I started at 2 pm to reach my destination in time and have a dinner before the start. Firstly the temperature caused a little bit of trouble and I had to make multiple stops at cemeteries. I tried to drink as much water as I could and keep my head cool. After Kapolcs the street was wet and the air was really humid. I was struggling with breathing. My head was a bit dizzy after I reached Balatonfüred. I wasn’t able to drink enough water in the heat. I fueled myself up with a ham pizza. It was super tasty

After the darkness has fallen, we started our journey. My body was still to hot. Finally we reached the high coast and I felt myself much better. The lightning accompanied us during the whole night. We saw it sometimes in front of us, sometimes behinds us, sometimes to the side. One lost cloud even soaked us after Siófok. Fortunately Zala County received the largest amount of precipitation. We chose the right, clockweise direction. Of course we had to fight with the wind, and the pavement was partly wet. The crowd was crazy in Siófok. A lot of young guys and girls wanted to have a party at the last summer weekend.

I wanted to have a hot drink at the train station of Keszthely. I was out of order. Nevertheless we eat a bit of food and continued the route. Our muscles were cold, the first couple of kilometers weren’t really enjoyable. The pavement was also absolutely garbage for road bikes. It was a pure punishment for body-soul-bike. The sunrise was interesting. It took a while till we were able to actually see the sun. The last dark clouds from the night passed away slowly. And suddenly it felt like someone turned the light on. My whole body was sore. Fortunately the grocery store was already open after we completed the big circle.

Conclusion:

Despite the bad weather circumstances, it was an interesting experience. This was the first time I cycled through the whole night. Continuation? Maybe there will be a Bu(dapest)-Ba(laton) bicycle tour in October.

Recommendation:

Round around the Lake at night isn’t a bad idea after all. The course doesn’t really lead on the coast, so the view to the lake is limited even at daylight. The mild temperature and traffic would be also beneficial. I recommend a storm-free and full moon night.

Prologue:

Unfortunately the hardest MTB marathon of Hungary (Mátra Maraton) will not be in the race calender anymore. The Hungary’s Most Difficult Marathon Title goes to the Bükk Maraton. I like challenges so – of course – I had to be there and I picked the longest course (77 km, 2000 m). I held a last before-the-race-training at weekend and it wasn’t really flawless. I felt myself weak and tired on the climbs. My body got better in the second half. In the end, I could even feel some power in the legs. I tried to rest as much as I could before the race.

Place and date:

Bélapátfalva

07.08.2022 Sunday

Equipment:

I took a saddle bag with me with the most necessary items: one spare tube, puncture repairment-kit, rear derailleur hanger, chainlinks, spd-cleat, and some bolts. I even had a couple of spare braking pads with me. The sealing of the brakes are crap and they has to be replaced. I was afraid, if I change the brake pads, air might can go into the brakefluid and I will be busted.

Tactics:

Own, but a little bit uncomfortable pace. I want to avoid any accident.

Bükk Maraton 0. Day:

Finally my new fully bike was ready to roll. I didn’t really had many opportunities to ride the new bike. I had to train for the marathons. I decided to take two bikes with me. I droped the beast in and I went to Lillafüred. Cyclist can also use the chairlift. And multiple lines are available for enduro and downhill riders. It is similar experience like aqua worlds in the childhood. You slide now and you can’t wait to do that again. It’s never get boring. The lift does the hard work, you can chill out. On the top of the hill you take off your bike, choose a line and let the gravity do its work.

Of course this isn’t as easy as it looks like. You need really good balance and good bike handling skills. The big bike helps a lot. I was surprised how easily the suspension sucked up the big holes.

After closing time I picked a route through the mountain. The pavement was incredibly bad, but the scenery was delightful. I inveted myself for a tasty mushroom soup and I get some puff pastry filled with cherry and poppy seeds. And I drank one beer, because I have earned it. I didn’t want to set up the tent. I made some place besides the donkeys and I slept in the car.

Raceday Report:

A storm passed during the night. It bought wind and rain. When I woke up in the morning the air was unusually cold and drafty. I forget to close the first two windows. My mattress lose some air in the night and my right shoulder got sore. I packed my sleeping gear, went to get my starter package and I prepared my bike. We got a red full cap which I do like a lot. I also received a backpack with water storage. It will suit to my fully well, because it doesn’t have bottle holder.

The race started at 10 am, so pretty late. After the start we immediately had a climb. It was perfect for warmup. Most of the time I was racing in my own pace. I was surprised that I could hold that pace for the entire race. This isn’t an easy thing to do for a longer period of time.

The course war dreamful. Finally we got pedallable gravel up-and downhill sections. A few people have got some technical issues. One guy folded his wheel, some people got flat tires. Sometimes I feel myself a bit frustrated, because I can’t really help them. And I saw a guy on the top, who tried to blow up the spare tube with his mouth. It was surreal. How much pressure can the human lungs produce? The answer is: 9.8 kPa = 1.4 psi = 0,1 bar. A tubeless wheel has 1,5 bar overpressure. Brass players have advantage!

In the first round I could overtake a lot of riders. I could really understand it, but the bike was flying under me. The first ascent of the secound round was brutal. It was a torture against my body and soul. It was a long and moderately steep ascent with millions of rocks and stones. I tried to get as much rest in the downhills as I could. A hardtail bike can reach its limits sooner, and 26er chainring wasn’t made for descents. I couldn’t follow Flash.

I applied my camel tactic in the refreshing points. I always filled my bottles up, because the weather was warm. Sometimes I had take of my helmet for cooling reasons. I almost caught a guy on the last uphill, but he ignited his missiles and I couldn’t follow him in the descent.

After I reached the finish line the assistants take down the finish area. I think 5 hours was a good results for me. The start of the longer distance could be at 8 am. Or maybe he could put this event on Saturday. It’s not fun, if you have to drive 5-6 hours after a demanding race. Not everyone has Holiday or a private driver.

Conclusion:

Hála az időben érkező lehűlésnek, a szép tájnak és a remek nyomvonalnak, nagyon szuper rendezvény volt. Most is a drágább nevezés mellett tettem le a voksom.

Prologue:

I wanted to take apart on this race/tour one more time. I wasn’t really happy when I found out that the event will be held in the middle of summer. I had multiple sickness in the spring and May didn’t really have a nice cycling weather. Moreover the heat can be unbearable.

Location and time:

Szentgotthárd

24.06.2022 Friday

Preparation:

Basically I want to improve myself in four segments to succesfully complete the distance: bike, equipment, nutrition and rest.

Bike: I made multiple modifications in my bike. I changed the stock alumium seatpost and handlebar to carbon fiber (S-Works, 50-50$, second hand) for improved comfort. I changed the shitty entry-level Shimano brakes to a four pistion brake (SRAM Guide R, 150$, second hand). I wasn’t really satisfied with these brakes. Regulary bleeding is needed, and the dot brake fluid is corrosive. It eats up the sealings and you have to replace them. And I do most of the maintenances and repairs in my bedroom. However the braking power suprised me. I can even lock the rear wheel while braking. The other big improvement was a „new” fork (Fox 32, 2017, 420$, second hand). It greatly improved the control over the bike and made the longer trainings more comfortable. I left the 26T chainring untouched. Unfortunately I don’t have enough power if things get awfully steep.

Equipment: I really missed a big handlebar bag last year. I bought a Revelate Designs Sweetroll for 100$. It can carry my new 1P tent (Campz Tignes 1P, 76$). I have got new, smaller „self inflating” (I always have to blow it up) mattress (Nordisk Vanna 2.5, 68$). I bought a top tube framebag, but it isn’t really worked, my knees always touched it out of the saddle. For small parts I have got a frame bag (Revelate Designs Cutthroat, 70$). It is perfect for my Epic HT (2017, S size) frame. Thus I will use the BBB fork luggage system (DualMount BBC-113, 66€, HaulerMount BBC-111 36€, StackPack+StackRack 32€). So my fork can carry my sleeping stuff and bottles.

Rest/nutrition: The new mattress and tent greatly improved the quality of my rest. I will use sun screen, different lotions and chamois creme. I will take with me i:AM Mineral isotonic drinking powder, Nutriversum protein powder, Squeezy aminoacid tabs, i:AM Mineral salt tabs, daily vitamin and calcium. I bought a Jetboil MiniMo camping stove (130€) and some gas. Unfortunately those things eat up a lot of storage place.

I am really curious about if the above mentioned equipment will be good. The prices are really high nowadays. If you aren’t bikepacking often, you shouldn’t buy expensive bags. In the long run it might worth it. For sure: real accomodation will give you a better rest. Those bags are made out of tough material. You shouldn’t trash them after your first longer trip.

F1rst Day: On Home Soil

The first 100 km was tough. I ate a lot of gels and my stomach was not in a good shape. The course was a difficult, not always logical and rather MTB-specific. There were mud, sand, pavement, everything you need. I made a longer break in Zalaegerszeg, where I almost get a heat stroke. I countinued in the evening/at nicht, when the tempratur much better was. I found a cosy place for my tent on a vineyard. Before I fell asleep I heard a boar not far away from my place. Early in the morning I was woken up by a loudly singing bird instead of the cock of the nearby village. My new stove worked very well. It took quite a long time till I folded up everything and got ready for the upcoming day.

Second Day: Balaton-like

The cool air in the morning was a pure salvation. Road quality varied from the Austrian gravel to the worst imaginable. Gravel bike owners should be rewarded for their efforts. I had to make a bath pause in the famous lake. My fuse melted again in the late afternoon heat. I ate dinner in a wine bar. And it was an interesting experience. 4 pieces of fried meat with some potato salat costed about 4000 HUF (10$). There was no toilet paper holder in the toilet. The waiters had a strategic discussion about the avaiable tables. If they would bring out more tables, maybe they people would have more places to sit down? I am not an expert, but this would make sense. I got some basic cyclist food from my friend. It was really helpful. The course wasn’t logical neither yesterday nor today. At least I could watch and took a nice photo from the sunset.

Third Day: Rolling On the Uplands

The day started slowly. One deer looked into my tent. After I folded everything together I continued my journey. After the first ascent I couldn’t see my sleeping bag. I had to go back. I took care of my soul with a coffee and some bananes. The heat was almost unbearable and it was only 9 O’ Clock. I was wondering, how long can I pedal, because reaching Budapest seemed impossible in this weather. I needed every bit of my courage to go through a remote area/mountain. I could find the rhythm on the roads. I fueled myself up in a really cosy restaurant in Nemesvámos. After that I was on my way to the next bigger ascent, when I lost one of my bottles. I had to go back. I took out one of my spare bolts and mounted it, after that I checked the other bolts as well. We went through an unbelievable slippery gravel road to reach the first village in Bakony. Everthing was already closed, but a cofe. I drank wine, soda, and ice coffee to get some energy for the upcoming climb. It went well, but I got lost in the dark and I went through nettles. They were taller than me. I got some nettle rash. I didn’t wanted to ride farther in the night. I found an awesome place not far away from the road. It was a perfect camping place.

Fourth Day: SandNegyedik nap: Homokolás

I didn’t sleep well due to the nettle rash. The resting place had a nice location, but it was really cold. I had to take on every layers I had. I made a royal breakfast in the village and I went through some unpleasant sandy parts to reach the the valley of Cuha. It was astonishing. Unfortunately I had to take off my jersey, because my skin couldn’t get enough fresh air. Somewhere – before the next big & hot ascent – I lost my wallet. Of course I noticed it on the top of the mountain… I went back, but too much time has passed and someone found it. Based on my experience, it is not really possible to do more than 100 km in the heat. I and a collague reached Isztimér, where we could find accomodation. I had to wash my bike, because the sand was killing the drivetrain. The former guestes were Ukrainen refugees and they left there a lot of mirelit food. The pub and shop were already closed, so we were really happy for this dinner. The night cost 10$, but we almost got back this money from the food.

Fifth Day: Heatwave

I woke up in the morning with rumbling stomach. My body absorbed every calories from the dinner. There was a storm at night and the hot air went away. At a Hike-A-Bike section I broke one of my fork luggage, so I had to solve some logistical problems. The Vértes is a really nice mountain in Hungary. It is a remote area and you can’t really find water on every corner. You have to pay attention to the fluid intake and you have to cool down your body. I noticed that my tracker isn’t tracker anymore. Too bad that I lost his cable. After that I gained some more meaningless elevation. I rode/walked up and got back down. I meet with Kuzma again. His charging didn’t really charged, so I remained in stealth mode. I made an another mistake here. I locked down my bike and once I heard its clicking noise, I was in trouble. The key of the lock was in my wallet. So I had to ask a couple of people, if they might cut my bike free. It was succesful. I didn’t really wanted to continue the day, so I had a discussion with Kuzma about whatthehellarewedoinghere and I tried to get some sleep.

Sixth Day: Last Piece

I couldn’t really get much sleep at night. The refrigerator was too loud. I didn’t have such problem in the previous nights… I ate my two hot dogs from yesterday and I checked out. It was an bad start of the day. The recepcionist told me that I have to pay 5000 Ft, because he only paid for one person. All right, I had 3000 Ft for a whole day in 104 °F… Without any plan went back to the course. After many boring up and downhills I reached the main road, where my electronical devices stopped working. My body was really suffering on the sun till I reached the trainstation and bought a ticket to Budapest. I realized that my friends in Budapest aren’t at home. And I had zero money. Fortunately I can meet a friend outside of the city. One passenger listened to my call and spent me some money, so I was able to buy a second train ticket. I got dinner, accomodation, clean clothes… It was dreamful.

Conclusion:

I have mixed feelings about the event. I looked around in Europe for similar events. One course in Switzerland contains less elevation change. That’s ridiculous. I think the goal of a bikepacking event should not be this. Why we were climbing so much with a bike full of luggage? The quality of roads were often so bad that I might buy a fully. I really liked the feeling of sleeping in a tent. On a tour like this you want a really lightweight bike and you can only carry the most important itemps (spare tubes, food, and some waterproof clothes).

You will feel every gramm on the ascents.

Recommendation:

I can’t recommand this event for hobby cyclists. Maybe ultracyclists with a comfy bike and without any luggage can find it interesting. It is a big challange. If you want to make a tour on your own, you can make a better course with the help of turistautak.hu. The pavement quality of your course will be better, I can guarantee it.
